Amid rising Gulf tension, Iran's Foreign Minister likely to visit Pakistan
ISLAMABAD - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is expected to visit Islamabad later this week, a senior diplomatic source disclosed on Tuesday.

The visit comes at a time when tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia and Iran and the US are escalating; Tehran has already warned that it would resume enrichment of Uranium as Trump has already withdrawn from 2015 nuclear deal.

The source said Zarif would call on civilian and military leaders during his daylong stay to Pakistan and would discuss the regional situation during his meetings.

The Iranian minister is also expected to discuss bilateral matters, especially border security in his expected tour.

The timing of the tour is crucial as it comes days before the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s two-day summit in Makkah from May 30 to 31; Prime Minister Imran Khan would tour Saudi Arabia for the session.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has also scheduled an emergency summit of the Arab League and it is expected that the Holy Kingdom would push for anti-Iran resolutions at both summits.

Mr Zarif would explain Iranian perspective on the developments in the region to Pakistani leaders and to enlist the support of Islamabad, Dawn News reported.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump warned that war would be 'end of Iran'.

On the other hand, Iran’s foreign minister insisted on Saturday that there was no appetite for war.

“There will not be a war since neither we want a war nor does anyone have the illusion they can confront Iran in the region,” Mohammad Javad Zarif told state news agency Irna.

The writer is a civil servant.
