LAHORE – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led Punjab government on Wednesday extended the parole duration for former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law by three days to attend the funeral prayers of deceased Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.
Earlier, the former premier, Maryam Nawaz and Captain (retd) Safdar, who are convicts in Avenfield reference and serving terms in the Adiala Jail, were released for 12 hours on Tuesday. They were shifted to their residence in Lahore amid tight security in the wee hours of Wednesday.
But there was a need to extend the duration as the body of the former first lady, who died in London on Tuesday, will reach Pakistan on Friday when she will be laid to rest in Jati Umra.
The period of three days parole will start from tonight at 12:00 until Saturday night, local media reported.
The home department spokesperson said that the time will be extended further if there will be delay in bringing back the body of Kulsoom Nawaz.
Meanwhile, the Lahore residence of Sharif family in Jati Umra has been declared sub-jail after the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and other convicts were brought to the place on parole following the demise of Begum Kulsoom.
Strict security arrangements have been made to avoid any untoward situation around the premises of the farmhouse where the former first lady will be buried on Friday.
