If a Hebrew prophet spoke from his cradle, Malika-e-Tarannum Noor Jehan crooned at birth.

When Noor Jehan was born on September 21, 1926 to an impoverished musician Madad Ali in Kasur, her aunt rushed out to greet her father thus ‘Congratulations brother! This girl will change your fortune for she cries in tune.’

Noor Jehan who ruled the hearts of listeners of her mellifluous voice for more than six decades, is rightly called the best of God’s creatures, who will live for centuries or perhaps forever.

It would be a downright shame to be a non-Urdu/Punjabi speaker, to be not familiar with Noor Jehan’s songs and moving tunes. From Sayoni Mera Mahi to Sadaa Hun Apne Pyar Ki, Noor Jehan did justice to the language and dialect she sang in.

When she sang Punjabi songs, her plaintive lamentations of Heer reflected the centuries old sweetness and folk history of Punjab and when she sang Urdu Ghazals, she maintained the dialectical nuances of Urdu pronunciation and would retune her voice to express the melancholic nature of Ghazal poetry.

Here are some of the melody queen’s evergreen songs. Though all of her songs are worth mentioning, here are some of our favourites:

Sadaa Hun Apne Pyar Ki…

Tere Dar Per Sanam Chalay Aaye…

Zamane Ki Nazron Mein…

Ja Apni Hasraton Per Aansoon Baha…

Jo Bacha Tha Wo Lutanay…

Woh Mera Na Hosaka…

Tere Qadmon Mein…

Teri Khatir Jal Rahay Hain…

Kahan Tak Suno Gae…

Koi Aaye…

Kis Tarha Bhoolega…

Mujhse Say Pehli Si Mohabbat Mere Mehboob…

Khuda Karay Ke Mohabbat…

Jo Na Milsakay Wohi Bewafa

Dil Dharakne Ka Sabab…

Silsilay Torr Gaya Woh…

Lat Uljhi Suljha Ja Re…

Kuch Log Rooth Ker Bhi…

Kisne Bajayi Hai Yeh…

Chaandani Raaten…

Humari Saanson Main Aaj Tak Woh…

Raat Phaili Hai Tere…

Le Aayi Phir Kahan Per Qismat…

Meri Zindagi Hai Naghma…

Ho Tamanna Aur Kya…

Jadon Holi Jayee…

Duniya Ch Dil Kolon…

Saanu Nehar Walay Pul Tay…

Kende Ne Naina…

Ja Aj Ton Main Teri…

Mahi Ve Sanun Bhul…

Muk Gaye Ne Hanju…

Sayoni Mere Dil Da Jani…

Way Mundeya Sialkotiya…

Panchi Te Pardesi…

Deed Hoyi Menun Ranjhan Di…

Dooron Dooron Akhiyan Mare….

Akh Lari Bado Badi…

Sayoni Mera Mahi Mere Bhaag…

Main Te Mera Dilbar Jani…

Ja Ja Ve Tenu Dil Ditta…

Bariyan Aashiq Mizaj Akhan…

Dhol Balocha Morr Muharan…

Wagdi Nadi Pani…

Maahi Aavega…

Sonay Di Taweetri…

Changa Banaya Ayee Sanoon Khidona…

Kali Kali Jaan Dukh Lakh…

Aeni Gal Das Deyo…

Wanjli Walerya…

Sun Wanjli Di Mithri…

Jehray Sheeshe Nun Thukrande Ne…

Tu Ki Janen Beqadra…

Adhi Rato Dhal Gayi Raat…
