UN finally responds to Priyanka Chopra's controversy for glorifying war
Unicef Goodwill Ambassador Priyanka Chopra, who has received immense criticism for a tweet supporting war, retains the right to speak in her personal capacity on issues concerning her, according to a UN spokesperson.

In answer to a question about Chopra, Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said,  “Unicef Goodwill Ambassadors speak in their personal capacity, they retain the right to speak about issues that interest or concern them,” reported Khaleej Times.

“Their personal views or actions do not necessarily reflect those of Unicef,” he added.

But, he said, “When they speak on behalf of the Unicef, we expect them to adhere to Unicef’s evidence-based impartial positions.”

Regarding their role, he went on to say: “The Unicef Goodwill Ambassadors are prominent individuals who have agreed to generously volunteer their time and their public profile to promote children’s rights.”

Priyanka Chopra has been under fire ever since she tweeted on February 26, a statement, “Jai Hind #IndianArmedForces,” followed by emojis of the Indian flag.

The 37-year-old's controversial comments have sparked a fierce backlash. Several online petitions have been launched to strip Chopra of her UN Ambassadorship, gaining thousands of signatures immediately.

Earlier this week, Federal Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari sent a letter to UNICEF to take action against Chopra and revoke her status as a UNICEF ambassador.

A Pakistani woman called out Chopra recently at Beautycon event in Los Angeles earlier this month for her faux celebrity activism.
