10 miners trapped in Balochistan coal mine

QUETTA - At least 11 miners were initially trapped more than a kilometer underground after the main entrance of a coal mine in Balochistan collapsed.

According to officials involved in the rescue operation, the incident occurred after a fire was ignited by an electrical short circuit in a coal mine in Degari area; some say the actual cause of the incident was the accumulation of methane gas.

Abdullah Shahwani, a top official for the industry in the province, said 11 miners were working on Sunday around 4,000 feet (1,200 metres) underground when the accident happened.

He shared that one miner had been rescued but 10 remain trapped inside with little hopes of survival as the rescue workers are facing problems in the operation.

The coal mine is run by the state-owned Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation and such incidents are common in land-wise biggest province of the country.

Earlier in January, at least four coal miners were killed and 19 fell unconscious after a coal mine collapsed because of a gas explosion in Dukki district.
