Supreme Court bans using explosives in Margala Hills
ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali has banned the use of explosives for construction in the Margalla Hills, remarking that “protection of the environment is our responsibility and the court cannot gloss over the issue."

Lamenting the destruction of the environment for commercial gain, Jamali condemned the blasting of the Margalla hills by stone crushers and the physical harassment of media persons who highlighted the issue.

“This issue has relevance to the environment and its protection is our obligation. The court cannot close its eyes to it,” the chief justice said, while taking suo motu notice against the axing of trees in Margalla Hills, which is a designated national park where such commercial logging is forbidden.

Justice Amir Hani Muslim remarked, “This matter is intolerable," while warning respective police Superintendents (SPs) of "dire consequences" if any blasting in the hills took place in the future.

Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf Ali told the court some that some areas in the Margalla Hills had been leased out to the FACTO cement company but the lease was cancelled later.

Remarking on the losses caused by such unchecked commercial activity, Jamali added: “Cracks have appeared in homes surrounding the hills due to explosions by stone crushers."

Justice Muslim also remarked: “The government is unaware what is going on in Margalla Hills”.

The court has adjourned hearing of the case till next week.
