Two children drown in Karachi's under-construction underpass

KARACHI - In a tragic turn of events, two children drowned in an under-construction underpass filled with water, on Thursday in Karachi.

According to reports, the incident took place at underpass at Punjab Chowrangi, that was filled with water owing to torrential downpour.

The body of one child was recovered the same day while a search is underway to retrieve the corpse of the other.

Sindh Minister for Local Bodies Jam Khan Shoro ordered an inquiry into the incident and expressed that whoever is found guilty, would be dealt with strictly.

"If the contractors are found guilty of being negligent, action will be taken against them," he said. "Contractors had been instructed to install safety barriers around the construction site," he added.

It bears mentioning that at least 11 people have lost their lives in two days in the metropolis owing to incidents of electrocuting.

The pre-monsoon spell that was initially perceived as a respite for heat-stricken Karachiites turned into misery due to poor management syatem and inefficiency of departments under the umbrella of local bodies.
