Will arrest Nawaz Sharif if court orders, says PM Abbasi

ISLAMABAD - Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has said that it seemed as Nawaz Sharif would get no justice from the accountability court hearing corruption cases against members of Sharif family following the Panamagate verdict.

The prime minister added that he government would implement the verdict either way, adding that Sharif would be arrested if such orders were passed.

Abbasi expressed his view while talking to a private news channel Thursday night, adding that the accountability court conducted only two hearing in a month in cases involving billions of rupees, while the trial of Sharif family was being conducted on a daily basis.

He said that the public and judicial history will not accept any verdict against the former prime minister.

It is worth mentioning that the accountability court is hearing three graft references filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against Nawaz Sharif, his children - Hasan, Hussain and Maryam Nawaz - and his son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar regarding Avenfield properties, Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investments. The cases have entered their final stages as key witness Wajid Zia, Panamagate JIT head, is being conducted.

Talking about meeting with Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, PM Abbasi said that the meeting was held in the interest of the country, adding that such meetings should be held in the future.

He said that horse-trading in Senate elections brought heavy damages to the credibility of the parliament and it will take time to be restored.

On Friday, the Supreme Court unanimously announced that the disqualification under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution was for a lifetime, sealing the political career of former Premier Nawaz Sharif and PTI’s former Secretary General Jahangir Tareen for life.

The much-awaited verdict was written and announced by Justice Umer Atta Bandial in courtroom no. 1 while Justice Azmat Saeed also wrote an additional note in the judgment.

The five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah voted 5-0 in favour of lifetime disqualification, though the proposal before the apex court was to reduce the embargo for 8 years.
