Australia make T20I history after record win against New Zealand

AUCKLAND - Australia head to the Tri Series final next week undefeated after taking home a record win from the Kiwis at Auckland’s Eden Park on Friday.

New Zealand set a mammoth 6/243 for Australia to chase, helped by a 49-ball century from veteran opener Martin Guptill.

Australia started its chase off well with David Warner (59) and D’Arcy Short (76) leading the way, but a flurry of wickets gave the home side hope as the overs ticked away.

It looked tense in the final overs but a huge six from Aaron Finch sealed the deal late in Australia’s innings to take their fourth T20I win in a row.

The run chase was highest in T20I history.

Australia’s win keeps the last match of the tri-series group stage alive. That fixture pits New Zealand against England on Sunday in a winner-takes-all decider for the right to face Australia in Wednesday’s final.

Guptill blasts way into T20 record books

New Zealand veteran Martin Guptill brought up his country’s fastest ever T20I century, beating legend Brendon McCullum’s 50-ball record by one ball in the 16th over.

The explosive opener belted Marcus Stoinis over long-on for his ninth six to bring up his triple figures.

Now, he also has the top T20I run-scorer title under his belt.
