22 commuters killed in stampede near Mumbai's railway station

MUMBAI: At least 22 people were killed and several injured after a stampede broke out near a suburban railway station in Mumbai on Friday.

As per reports, the incident occurred in rush-hour when people panicked following a heavy bang due to short-circuit amid heavy rainfall, after which they tried to leave a foot overbridge connecting Elphinstone Road to Parel Railway Station.

According to the local media, the stampede happened around 10.30 am. Some onlookers say that four trains reached the station at the same time, adding that there were more people than usual on the weak bridge as some commuters had taken shelter there due to rain.

They claimed some commuters slipped off the bridge that spread panic among the people leading towards the tragedy.

According to railway officials, the police and the fire brigade reached the site after the incident and shifted the people to the hospital.

The deadly incident erupted as they all wanted to leave the bridge at once due to which some slipped from the bridge, triggering the situation, he added.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter as saying, "My deepest condolences to all those who have lost their lives due to the stampede in Mumbai. Prayers with those who are injured".

He further said, "Situation in Mumbai is being continuously monitored". The Prime Minister added that Railway Minister Piyush Goyal is in Mumbai taking stock of the situation and ensuring all assistance.
