27 Afghan security personnel killed in Taliban attacks

KABUL - At least 27 members of Afghan security forces lost their lives when Taliban launched multiple attacks on checkpoints as well as police and military bases in different parts of the country.

The Afghan forces are trying to secure the war-torn country after US and Nato formally ended their combat mission in the country in 2014.

The Afghan forces have struggled to combat both the Taliban and an affiliate of the militant Islamic State group.

In the western Farah province, attacks began on Sunday night and killed at least 17 members of the security forces. Fared Bakhtawer, head of the provincial council, said the Taliban attacked police checkpoints across the province and around the provincial capital.

Earlier, at least 40 Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were killed and more than 10 were left injured in a clash with Taliban in Dasht-i-Archi district of northern Afghanistan.
