Pemra imposes Rs. 1 million fine on Hum TV for airing ‘objectionable’ content

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) imposed a fine of Rs1 million on Hum TV for airing ‘objectionable clips’ in one of its drama series.

The leading entertainment channel aired an episode titled “Chewing Gum” for its drama series “Kitni Girhein Baqi Hein” having “objectionable content” on January 29.

Following scores of complaints by public, the media regulator issued a show-cause notice to the Eye Television Network Pvt Limited later in February.

After hearing Hum TV’s viewpoint regarding the content, committee unanimously agreed that the content was in violation of the clauses 3(1)(a), 3(1)(e), 12 and 17 of the Electronic Media (Programmes and Advertisements) Code of Conduct, 2015.

“Thus on account of the airing of the episode “Chew Gum” in the drama serial “Kitni Girhein Baqi Hein” having indecent content… a fine of Rs 1,000,000 (rupees one million) is imposed on Hum TV, payable within three weeks from the issuance of this decision,” said the press release.

The hefty fine follows a ban on Geo television’s morning show ‘Geo Pakistan’ for five days in addition to a penalty worth the same amount.
