LAHORE – Pakistan’s disgraced prime minister Nawaz Sharif was shifted to Lahore’s Services Hospital from Kot Lakhpat prison on Saturday after approval from Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar.
The provincial government made the decision after a special medical board constituted to monitor his health had recommended that Sharif be shifted to a hospital from prison.

The suggestion was made to the provincial home ministry in a report as the former premier has developed cardiac complications.
Security arrangements remain beefed up at the hospital, where the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo has been kept in a VIP room.
On the other hand, the medical superintendent says has Services Hospital has all the basic facilities but doesn’t have the facilities to treat cardiac conditions
“We can provide initial treatment and can treat all other illnesses,” Dr Qambar Zia told the media.

A three-member medical board, comprising of Professor Mehmood Ayaz, Professor Sajid Nisar and Prof Kamran Cheema will examine the PML-N leader in the hospital. Nawaz will stay in the hospital until medical tests are conducted.
“Superintendent jail will ensure early shifting of the prisoner [Nawaz] back to the Central Jail Lahore, in consultation with respective hospital authorities, after requisite medical examination/investigation/management, under foolproof security arrangements,” read a notification issued by the government of Punjab home department.
A few days earlier, a team of doctors had conducted a medical examination of the former premier at Kot Lakhpat jail.
Senior doctors had recommended that the former premier be shifted to a hospital after he was taken to Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC), where for further tests, including an echocardiogram (ECG) and Thallium test reports revealed that his heart was bigger than normal.
His personal doctor has also urged the provincial government to shift Nawaz Sharif to the hospital to get additional medical tests and treatment in a bid to ascertain reasons for the chest pain he was suffering from.

Following the medical reports, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leaders had criticised the federal and Punjab government for not providing proper medical treatment to the former premier .
PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb had demanded that the nation be apprised regarding Nawaz’s health and his medical reports be handed over to his family immediately.
