ISLAMABAD – The federal government has reportedly offered renowned lawyer Asma Jehangir the post of Attorney General of Pakistan.
Sources in ruling PML-N confided to Daily Pakistan that the government has decided to dislodge incumbent Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf Ali from this position. “Newly elected Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi after consultation with Nawaz Sharif, party head PML-N, offered this slot to the former president Supreme Court Bar Association (Asma Jehangir),” the sources added.
They further said the government desires that Asma Jehangir appear as Attorney General before the five-member bench during review petition, and argue in favour of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
The 65-year-old human rights lawyer, who recently criticised the apex court’s decision, would respond to the government after consultation with close friends and aides, according to the sources.
However, Ms Jehangir says she never received such an offer. Despite repeated attempts, the lawyer was unavailable for her comments.
