KARACHI – A police operation is underway in Karachi to arrest Abdul Kareem Sarosh, a commander of banned Ansar al-Sharia group, who escaped earlier today during a raid in which a policeman was martyred and one injured.
Following a tip-off regarding presence of militants belong to a banned group Ansar al-Sharia in a house in Kaneez Fatima Society, police conducted a raid to arrest them. As the police reached, the terrorists opened fire on raiding party causing death of an official named Ijaz.
During the gun battle, the terrorist managed to escape from the scene, but two suspect have been apprehended from the house.
Rescue officials shifted the dead body and injured to hospital for medical procedure.
Police officials are conducting search operations in the area to trace the escaped terrorists, while heavy contingents have been deployed on the incident spot.
According to Malir SSP Rao Anwar, escaped terrorist has been identified as Abdul Kareem Sarosh, who is a student of Karachi University.
He claimed that Abdul Kareem is a commander of Ansal al-Sharia and also mastermind of an attack on MQM-Pakistan’s leader Khawaja Izharul Hassan.
Attack on Khawaja Izharul Hassan
On Saturday, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) senior leader Khawaja Izharul Hassan escaped an assassination attempt as he was leaving a mosque after offering Eid-ul-Azha prayers early in Buffer Zone area.
Hassan’s security guard and a child were killed and five others were injured.
Four assailants on two motorcycles opened fire on the MQM-P leader as he exited the mosque after Namaz-e-Eid, Larik explained.
The DIG went on to mention that police gave a chase to the assailants and an exchange of gunfire also took place, leading to the death of one of the attackers. A second assailant, however, managed to escape getting caught.
