Ugandan athlete set on fire by boyfriend after Paris Olympics

In a shocking turn of events, a Ugandan athlete participating in the Paris Olympics has been severely injured after an alleged attack by her boyfriend. According to the Kenya Police, the athlete, identified as Rebecca Cheptegei, suffered severe burns after her boyfriend, Dixon Andima, reportedly set her on fire.

The incident occurred at Cheptegei’s residence in Trans Nzoia County, Kenya. The athlete, who competed in the marathon event at the 2024 Paris Olympics and finished in 44th place, is reported to have sustained burns on 75% of her body.

Jeremiah Ole Kosiom, the police commander for Trans Nzoia, confirmed that the altercation between Cheptegei and Andima escalated when Andima allegedly doused her with petrol and ignited it. Both individuals sustained injuries in the incident and were subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment.

Cheptegei’s parents have revealed that their daughter had recently purchased land near athletic centers in Trans Nzoia County, aiming to support her training and future endeavors. The report also notes that the attack followed a heated exchange of words between the couple.

The case has shocked the athletic community and has drawn widespread condemnation, highlighting the urgent need for awareness and intervention in domestic violence cases.
