Layyah toxic sweets case: Shopkeeper’s younger brother admits to poisoning

LAYYAH (Staff report) – Finally police have solved the Layyah toxic sweets case after the younger brother of the shop’s owner on Thursday admitted to poisoning the food.

According to a statement recorded by police, the accused, Khaild said that he added poison to the sweet.

“My brother used to torture me, therefore I added a poisonous substance in the sweets,” Khalid said and added that he didn’t want to kill anyone but only wanted closure of his brother’s shop.

At least 33 people including eight of the same family lost their lives after eating poisoned sweets in Layyah.

The incident reportedly took place when Umar Hayat, a resident of Chak 105/TDA brought sweets from a nearby sweetshop located at Chowk 111 to celebrate the birth of his grandson. After eating toxic sweets five persons died on the spot while several others fell unconscious.

The deceased and fainted persons were rushed to a local hospital for medico legal formalities and treatment.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif also visited Layyah to offer his condolences with the families of the deceased.
