Ban on images and speech: Altaf Hussain moves SC against LHC decision

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – MQM Chief Altaf Hussain has moved Supreme Court against Lahore High Court (LHC) decision vis-à-vis restricting the broadcast of his images and speeches.

The appeal has been filed by his lawyer Asma Jahangir in the Supreme Court on Monday.

The appeal states that the LHC decision violates freedom of expression, basic rights and the constitution.

According to the appeal the Supreme Court should declare the LHC decision null and void.

On September 07, the LHC issued orders restricting Pakistani television channels and newspapers from broadcasting or publishing speeches, statements, photos or activities of MQM chief Altaf Hussain.

The LHC also issued instructions to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) in this regard.

A three-member bench comprising Justice Syed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, Justice Mazhar Iqbal Sidhu and Justice Erum Sajad Gull passed the orders while hearing three identical petitions filed by Malik Maqsood Ahmad Awan, Aftab Ahmad Virk and Abdullah Malik for proceedings against Altaf Hussain under Article 6 of the Constitution.
