ISLAMABAD – Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Sunday said that he was not in favour of confronting institutions, but he was determined to uncover the “conspiracy” hatched against him.
The Supreme Court disqualified Nawaz on his failure to disclose his ‘un-withdrawn receivables, constituting assets’ in his nomination papers filed ahead of the 2013 general elections. It also ordered filing of references against him, his children and son-in-law.
“I will not yield to pressure despite the fact that I was subjected to exploitation under the garb of accountability,” Nawaz said during an informal talk with the businessmen of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
Regretting “exploitation of his family in the name of accountability”, Sharif vowed not to be cowed down saying that he is aware of what is going to happen to him next.
He said people have not accepted Panama Leaks case verdict, and questioned why have not the ones looting billions and abrogating constitution not been held and punished to date.
The former prime minister said he believed in the rule of law and accepted the court verdict, adding, “I am not in favour of confronting institutions, however, I will uncover the conspiracy.”
“People had given mandate (to me); civilian supremacy should be accepted,” he added.
Former interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan also met former prime minister at Punjab House. He briefed Sharif about preparations for his Lahore visit that is scheduled on Wednesday.
Sharif is going to visit his hometown of Lahore for the first time since his disqualification. He has decided to travel to Lahore via Grand Trunk (GT) Road on the insistence of PML-N leaders and workers belonging to the cities and towns along the road to accord their leader a rousing welcome.
On Friday, the ruling party picked Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as the next PM, while Punjab CM Shehbaz Sharif is believed to be a strong candidate to be ‘permanent’ premier after the by-election for NA-120, the seat left vacant after Nawaz’s disqualification.
