Prime suspect in Asma rape-killing case traced after DNA matches samples

LAHORE – In a major development, Punjab government on Tuesday informed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government that one of the samples sent by the latter matched the sample taken from the body of minor girl, killed in Mardan after being raped, local media reported.

Investigating the case, the KP police had sent samples of 145 people to the Punjab fScience Agency (PFSA) for screening.

On Jan 13, the four-year-old had gone missing while playing outside her house in the Jandarpar Gujjar Garhi area of Mardan. On January 14, body of the four-year-old Asman was found in nearby sugarcane fields.

The name of the accused has not been disclosed yet, while, according to media reports, the KP police have launched action to arrest the suspect.

On Jan 26, the Supreme Court of Pakistan also took suo moto notice of the minor girl rape and killing case in Mardan in January after the forensic test confirmed the four-year-old was raped before strangled to death.

Zainab Case

In January, Punjab police had solved a same kind of case in which a seven-year-old girl, Zainab, was killed and raped in Kasur. The police trace the main accused, identified as Imran Ali after his DNA matched samples taken from the crime scene.

Zainab was kidnapped on January 4 when she was on her way to Holy Quran class. Her body was discovered five days later from a garbage pile. The post-mortem report revealed that the minor girl had been raped and murdered.
