Contempt case: SC gives 10 days to Daniyal Aziz for finalising legal counsel

ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday granted 10 days time to Federal Privatisation Minister Daniyal Aziz to finalize his legal counsel in the contempt of court case.

On February 2, the apex court issued a contempt of court notice to Aziz for his alleged anti-judiciary speeches.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed conducted today’s proceedings. On his request, Aziz was then given 10 days to finalise counsel and the case was adjourned until February 19.

Sources said the registrar refered to various speeches made by the state minister in which he insulted the judiciary.

On Tuesday, the apex court also issued a show-cause notice to Minister of State for Interior Affairs Tallal Chaudhry over his anti-judiciary remarks and gave him a week’s time to submit his response.

Earlier, the apex court announced its verdict in the contempt case of Senator Nehal Hashmi, sentencing him to one-month imprisonment and Rs50,000 fine.

The Supreme Court also ruled that Hashmi stood disqualified from holding public office for of five years under Article 63 (1)(g) of the constitution.
