Nawaz Sharif baffled by Supreme Court s assurance to Gen Musharraf

ISLAMABAD – Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday expressed reservations over the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s way to handle the case of former chief of army staff and president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf.

Talking to reporters in the accountability court, hearing corruption cases against Sharif family, the former premier questioned, “How a man like Musharraf can be given a guarantee by the court”.

He was referring to Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar’s assurance that former president would not be arrested upon his arrival on the next hearing and conditionally allowed him to submit the nomination papers to contest the upcoming general elections.

CJP Nisar on Thursday gave the remarks while hearing of Musharraf’s review petition against his disqualification by the Peshawar High Court in 2013 and directed the former military ruler to appear before the top court’s Lahore registry.

Nawaz said how Musharraf, who is involved in several serious cases, like Akbar Bugti murder, judges confinement, breaching Constitution twice and May 12 carnage, can be given assurance.

“Where have gone the high treason cases and Article 6 of the Constitution?” he asked, adding, “We are unable to understand this development”.

“Everbody is surprised how the chief justice can give such remarks,” he said, adding that under which law the guarantee was given to the military ruler.

The three-time prime minister said that he was disqualified by the apex court for life in the Panamagate case.

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) had announced lifetime disqualification for former president Pervez Musharraf prior to the 2013 general election; Musharraf had filed a plea in 2016 in the Supreme Court against the verdict.

Musharraf’s CNIC, Passport Blocked

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has blocked computerised national identity card (CNIC) of former president Pervez Musharraf, a private news channel reported on Thursday.

The report said that with the CNIC’s blocking, Musharraf’s passport has also been blocked and accounts frozen.
