When Edhi refused to stone the devil during Hajj

KARACHI (Web Desk) – Since the sad demise of one of Pakistan’s greatest philanthropists Abdul Sattar Edhi, a number of stories have come to light which highlight the national icon’s deep concern for the state of the country.

One of them concerns the famed social worker’s pilgrimage to Makkah in 1977 along with family. During Hajj, he reportedly refused to stone the devil – which is a central ritual in the sacred Islamic pilgrimage.

Recently, Edhi’s wife Bilquis Edhi narrated the episode during an interview. She said that when Edhi was given the stones with which to pelt the devil, he refused to perform the ritual, saying: “There are plenty of devils in Pakistan, I will stone them when I return to my country. I can’t find any devil here”.
