ISLAMABAD – The Punjab government has submitted an interim report on the losses suffered by the province during the protests held by the religious against the acquittal of Asiab Bibi in a blasphemy case to the Supreme Court.
It claimed that the province alone incurred losses worth Rs226 million, as per the recent estimation, during the three-day long protests when the agitators damaged public and private property in different cities of Punjab.
The government also sought more time to submit the final report.
On Nov 7, Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar had taken notice of the arson and damage to public properties during the Tehreek-e-Labaik Pakistan (TLP) protests that erupted after the top court’s decision to acquit Aasia Bibi.

According to a statement issued Wednesday night, the Chief Justice said that the properties of people were damaged during the three-day protests after the Supreme Court’s decision.
The Chief Justice had sought report of the damage during the protests from the federal government and the provinces.
After SC’s October 31 judgement that acquitted Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman, in a blasphemy case, TLP launched a countrywide protest, bringing several cities to a standstill for nearly three days.

The interior ministry has started criminal proceedings against rioters involved in destroying property during the countrywide protests against a Supreme Court verdict acquitting Aasia Bibi.
The ministry on Sunday released initial pictures of the miscreants involved in vandalising property and harming common citizens during the demonstrations, which ended on Friday after the government reached an agreement with the protesters.
