Three policemen martyred as gunmen open fire on checkpoint in Quetta

QUETTA – Three policemen were martyred while a passer-by was injured when unidentified persons opened fire at a checkpoint on Sariab Road in Quetta on Sunday.

According to police sources, two attackers on a motorcycle opened fire on a police post near Chaki Shahwani on Saryab Road, killing one officer on the spot and wounding two others before fleeing.

The critically wounded officials succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

The rescue sources said they had taken the body of the killed policeman and injured people to Civil Hospital Quetta. Doctors at the facility had stated the condition of the two personnel to be critical.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

The law and order situation in Balochistan, bordering Afghanistan and Iran, remains disturbed as the province has been plagued for decades by terrorist attacks and sectarian killings.

Balochistan is a key region for China s ambitious $46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) infrastructure project linking its western province of Xinjiang to the Arabian Sea via Pakistan.
