Khurram Dastagir gets another portfolio of foreign minister

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Friday approved the name of Minister for Defence Khurram Dastagir as new foreign minister of Pakistan, reported local media.

The position fell vacant after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) disqualified former foreign minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif for not declaring his foreign work permit and bank account in nomination papers for 2013 general elections.

On April 26, Khawaja Asif, who is a central leader of PML-N and had contested elections from Sialkot in 2013, was declared ineligible unanimously for holding office, on account of Article 62 (1)(f) of the constitution in a case related to his foreign permit (iqama).

‘Khawaja Asif deliberately concealed his assets’ remarked the court in a judgment announced by Justice Athar Minallah who headed a three-member larger bench.

Khurram Dastgir previously served as the Minister for Commerce in the third government of PML-N from 2014 to 2017.

Khan studied engineering from the California Institute of Technology and economics at Bowdoin College before being elected to National Assembly of Pakistan in 2008 general election.

After getting re-elected to the National Assembly in 2013 general election, he was appointed as Minister for State for Science and Technology, Minister of State for Privatisation and Minister of State for Commerce until he was made Minister for Commerce in 2014.
