Pakistan calls for expansion in UNMOGIP to counter rising threats

NEW YORK – Pakistan has called for the expansion in the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) to counter the rising threats to peace and security in the region.

Speaking in the Special Committee on Peacekeeping at the United Nations, Pakistan’s Ambassador to UN, Dr. Maleeha Lodhi said that the UN Mission, UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan is a critical factor for stability in the region. This needs to be expanded to respond to existing threats and realities.

She reiterated Pakistan’s unflinching support to UN peacekeeping, both as one of its largest and consistent contributors and also as the host of one of the UN’s oldest peacekeeping missions.

The ambassador emphasized the need to address the root causes of conflict to bring about lasting peace.

She called for concrete steps to be taken to ensure the safety of UN peacekeepers.
