Protesting young doctors baton-charged in Peshawar, five arrested

PESHAWAR: Police on Tuesday cracked down on representatives of Young Doctors Association (YDA), who were protesting at Hayatabad Medical Complex in Peshawar and resorted to baton-charge to disperse them.

The doctors had given a call to shut the different wards of the hospital, including the out-patient department (OPD) to endorse their demands.

Therefore, a heavy contingent of riot police was deployed outside the wards to control any uncertainty. The police started baton-charge on doctors after a heated argument occurred when doctors tried to walk past police officers.

During the protest, the police also arrested five person, including YDA President Dr Gulab Noor Afridi for violating Section 144, which has been imposed since previous few months.

Speaking to the media, Gulab Noor Afridi questioned: “If Imran Khan can hold demonstration in the Red Zone then why can’t the doctors stage protest at the hospital’s lawn?” He added that protest was constitutional right of every citizen.
