KARACHI – As many as two more children died in the past 24 hours in Tharparkar region due to malnutrition, taking the toll of children dying of various reasons to 17 only in running month.
According to the Sindh Health Department, the infants aged five and eight-days succumbed to malnutrition at Civil Hospital, Mithhi.
The recent death of two children has taken the death toll to 493 for the year while no emergency measures have been taken by the government to control the continuous death in the region.
On Tuesday, Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar took notice of children’s deaths due to malnutrition in Sindh’s Tharparkar region.
The Chief Justice has summoned the additional secretary general Sindh, stating that the issue is being faced by people since long.
He said, “Court wants solution of this issue and not the report”. The top judge remarked that he could not see the people dying, adding that he will go and sit there if the matter was not resolved.
According to the health department, every year 1,500 children die due to malnutrition, infections and lack of proper medical facilities in the remote region.
A report released by the United Nation’s Children Fund in April stated that Pakistan is among countries with the highest infant mortality rates, with 22 infants dying before turning one month old.
