ISLAMABAD – The Islamabad High Court on Thursday accepted a petition filed by former Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) chief Zafar Hijazi against special court’s orders regarding his acquittal plea in the record-tampering case.
Hijazi, who is accused of pressuring the subordinates to alter the record, has argued in his petition that the special court had rejected his acquittal plea by ignoring the evidence presented by him in the case. He asked the high court to nullify the decision of the court.
The court has set December 20 to hear the case.
In October, a special court of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) indicted Hijazi for altering records related to the Sharif family’s Chaudhry Sugar Mills. Later, he challenged the indictment, but the special court turned down his plea.
Hijazi was taken into FIA custody earlier this year after a report released by the Panama Papers case joint investigation team (JIT), probing then prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family’s wealth, accused Hijazi of tampering with the record of Chaudhry Sugar Mills related to Sharif family.
A case was registered against Hijazi on the orders of the Supreme Court after the three-member Panama Papers case implementation bench acted on the JIT report.
