Powerless Farooq Sattar announces to leave party convenership

KARACHI – Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan convener  Farooq Sattar has decided to hand over his charge to the party’s Bahadurabad group.

While speaking to party workers at KMC ground in PIB Colony Sunday night, Sattar announced that he would not participate in the upcoming general elections.

Farooq Sattar clarified that he did not want MQM-P’s convenership as charity, adding that he would not be responsible for any misconduct in the party after this announcement.

The Karachi based politician expressed that there was no need for a leader who had no powers.”I will work as a party worker”, he added.

However, MQM Bahadurabad group, led by Amir Khan expressed disappointment over Sattar’s statement.

The faction’s spokesperson said Rabita Committee made all possible efforts to nullify the impression of division, adding that they would not respond to Sattar’s statements as it would ignite the situation further.

The terms between MQM-P’s Bahadurabad and PIB groups have been fluctuation since the past few months.

MQM-P split into two groups after differences in the party came to the fore in February over the matter of tickets for Senate elections that took place on March 3.

Earlier,  the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)  removed Dr. Farooq Sattar as convenor of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P).

However, on March 1, Sattar had challenged the ECP’s jurisdiction to hear a petition filed by the Bahadurabad faction. The former convener of the party through his counsel argued that the commission cannot hear the case as it was an internal matter.

Sattar had dissolved the coordination committee and announced fresh intra-party elections when the committee announced to remove him from the post of convener on February 11

On Feb 18, the MQM-P held intra-party elections when Sattar was again elected as convener of the party.
