Lovemaking on camera in Bollywood is unaesthetic, inept: Om Puri

MUMBAI (Web Desk) – Seasoned and veteran actor Om Puri thinks Indian actors do not know how to make love on camera. He wonders why Indian actors do lovemaking scenes with their clothes on. It’s ridiculous. “Where in the world, and how, do people make love with their clothes on? If you don’t want to show actors without their clothes, just shoot the faces. There is no point in shooting an unconvincing love scene. I am sorry to say our love-making scenes are highly unaesthetic.”

In an interview Puri said, “I’d like to say that lovemaking in our films is really the pits. We, Indian actors, don’t know how to make love on camera. There’s just so much awkwardness in movements of the body. We’re all limbs and elbows. It looks very fake and strained.”

Citing his steamy scenes with Rekha in Basu Bhattacharya’s Astha, Om Puri said the sequences could have been done “much more aesthetically” and added that our actors are too conscious of their body to ensure that the love scenes look convincing.

The actor was seen in intimate scenes with actor Mallika Sherawat in his last film Dirty Picture, as well as with late Smita Patil in Aakrosh (1980).

Om Puri also said in the interview that nudity is not mandatory for a credible lovemaking sequence. Talking about his lovemaking scene with Smita Patil in Govind Nihalani’s Aakrosh, Om said that Smita wore her saree throughout the sequence but it wasn’t contrived as the actors were not hesitant to shed inhibitions. He even promised to have the “best lovemaking scene ever shot in our country” when he makes a film.
