After gas, govt likely to increase electricity price by Rs3.75/unit today

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government is likely to hike the electricity price by Rs3.75 per unit today after it increased gas price for common people and others.

Finance Minister will be chairing a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) today when the decision in this regard will be taken.

On Monday, the government prepared a summary suggesting a hike in power tariffs that will put extra burden on the consumers who are already facing inflation with the start of the PTI government which had pledged to facilitate the common man.

“Recommendations have been made for increase in prices for the years 2016-17 and 2017-18 as per which the price per unit is expected to surge to Rs3.75,” local media reported.

The government, which is facing shortage of reserves and in contact with the International Monetary Fund for the largest bailout, is expected to collect additional Rs400 billion per month after the hike in power tariff.
