LHC accepts petition seeking General Raheel Sharif s extension

LAHORE – Lahore High Court on Thursday accepted the petition that sought the extension of the incumbent Chief of army staff, General Raheel Sharif.

“The petition has been accepted for further hearing. The petition cited the ‘prominent success’ of Zarb-e-Azb as the main reason for the COAS’ extension”, reported Dunya News.

The petitioner, Ghazi Ilmuddin Advocate, pleaded to the court that the ongoing war against terrorism under the COAS has culminated into stability and peace in the country and to ensure the further ‘progression and continuity’, it was indispensable for the chief to avail the extension in his tenure.

The COAS was appointed for three years as the Army Chief on 27 Nov. 2013, replacing General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, who was given a three-year extension by the then government of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

The Army Chief is supposed to retire on Nov 28 this year and Gen. Rashad Mahmood, who is the existing Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Committee, will be retiring a day prior to the Army Chief, on Nov 27.
