Vice Chairman PBC misusing his office, joining stance of political parties, accuses Barrister Raheel Kamran Sheikh

ISLAMABAD – Member of Pakistan Bar Council and advocate Supreme Court, Raheel Kamran Sheikh on Wednesday accused the Vice Chairman PBC, Ahsan Bhoon of misusing his office and joining the stance of political parties.

Accusing the Vice Chairman of partisanship in a letter to all members of the council, the advocate said that in its 217th Meeting held on 5th November, 2016 Pakistan Bar Council had resolved to take up the Panama Papers’ case in the next meeting of the Council, however, the matter was not discussed in the Meetings.

On the contrary, the advocate argued, “Ahsan Bhoon, while encroaching upon authority of the Council, has been misusing his office while joining stance of political parties initially to oppose demand for the resignation of the Prime Minister and subsequently while demanding his resignation and announcing a countrywide strike.”

He said an impression has been created as if the demands made by him and a couple of members of his group are the demands of Pakistan Bar Council.

“I protest against such usurpation of the authority of the Council by Mr Bhoon and demand that meeting of the Council be convened immediately on the subject, as already resolved in 217th Meeting of the Council,” he said adding that personally, he is of the view that PBC, as apex regulatory body of the legal profession, must stay away from taking sides with any political party.

“I propose to demand that the decision in Panama Papers’ case must be made in accordance with law and the Constitution, without any fear or favour, and if any political party threatens or scandalizes the Court or any Judge of the Supreme Court or otherwise obstructs the course of justice, PBC should file an application for the Contempt of Court in addition to condemning it.”
