Vulgar essay question: AIOU removes paper-setter with better policy pledge

LAHORE – A paper-setter who came under fire over the issue of a vulgar essay question in AIOU exams has been delisted from the university’s panel.

Shagufta Siraj was removed from AIOU’s paper-setting panel after an inquiry committee presented its report on the probe into an indecent and illogical essay question in Functional English paper of SSC Examination Spring 2016, a university spokesman said on Monday.

Mr. Ubaidullah, the AIOU spokesman, added the question No. 5 of the paper has been cancelled and proportionate marks would be awarded to the students who appeared in the paper.

A high-level committee has also been constituted by the AIOU administration to propose a more effective paper setting policy to ensure that such incidents do not occur in the future, according to the spokesperson.

Earlier this month, tempers were running high over the controversial question paper by Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) in which the Matric students were asked to write an essay on the “personality of elder sister.”

While the 15-marks question in Functional English-II, Spring Semester 2016, for class Matric seemed a bit odd and narrowly accepted, the “aspects” to be mentioned appeared to be highly obnoxious as they included: Age, Physique, Height, Looks, and Attitude etc.

Parents and education activists termed the essay question unethical and against the norms of the society. They also called upon the university administration to sack the teacher who designed the paper.
