KARACHI – At least two people have been shot dead while two are injured after unidentified armed motorcyclists attacked two cars registered under the name of Darul Uloom Korangi on Friday.
In one incident, police said that unknown motorcyclists opened fire at a car from both sides at least eight times at Nipa Chowrangi Flyover in Karachi and fled. It is believed to be an incident of targeted killing, police told the media.
Darul Uloom Karachi’s Maulana Amir Shahab and his security guard, a policeman identified as Sanobar Khan, were attacked while they were travelling in a car.
Shahabullah is being treated at Jinnah Hospital while Sanober passed away.
A passerby was also injured in the incident. The car, a Toyota Corolla 2007 model, was registered in the name of Darul Uloom Korangi.
The assailants easily managed to flee the crime scene.
In another incident that took place with the gap of 15 minutes, the car of eminent religious scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani came under attack on Shahrah-e-Faisal near Nursery, the DIG West said.
Usmani was travelling along with his wife and two grandsons, all of them remain safe.
His guard passed away in the incident while the driver sustained injuries, he added. The car was also registered under Darul Uloom Korangi’s name.
Officials said around eight casings of 9mm bullets were found at the attack site.
Karachi Police Chief Amir Sheikh said that both incidents are related. Governor Sindh said that the cleric had been receiving threats.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took notice of the incident and sought a report from Additional IG Karachi. Shah also ordered the immediate arrest of the suspects.
Police, after registering a case against unidentified attackers, have started an investigation.
