Pakistan conducts first successful flight test of ABABEEL surface-to-surface long range missile

RAWALPINDI – Pakistan on Tuesday conducted a successful test flight of a surface-to-surface missile, with a 2200km range, according to an army’s spokesman.

ABABEEL, which can hit the target at a range of 2200km, is capable of delivering multiple warheads, using Multiple Independent Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology.

It can also carry nuclear warheads and has the capability to engage multiple targets with high precision.

The test flight was aimed at validating various design and technical parameters of the weapon system.

Development of Ababeel Weapon System is aimed at ensuring survivability of Pakistan’s ballistic missiles in the growing regional Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) environment, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement. “This will further reinforce deterrence.”

Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Zubair Mahmood Hayat, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshall Sohail Aman and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Zaka Ullah congratulated the team behind this landmark achievement, according to the ISPR.

Also, President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minisiter Nawaz Sharif conveyed their appreciation to the team and armed forces for successful missile test.
