Health minister Saira Afzal Tarar says elimination of polio in sight; govt will stay firm

ISLAMABAD (Staff Report) – Minister for National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination (NHSRC) Saira Afzal Tarar has said that the goal of full polio eradication is in sight and the government will not allow this historic opportunity to be missed.

Chairing a meeting to review the country’s progress on polio eradication, she directed authorities to take all the challenges faced in Karachi, northern Sindh and southern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) head on and resolve quality issues in all areas.

She informed the meeting that Pakistan had so far registered only 12 new polio cases this year, compared to 28 in the first half of 2015.

“The proportion of presence of polio virus in water samples is at an all-time low and areas such as Karachi’s Gadap Town and Shaheen Muslim Town of Peshawar have been reported as negative after a long time,” she said.
