TV star Mani apologizes for making joke out of Metoo movement

KARACHI – The global #Metoo movement has taken the world by a storm. It all started when a lady from the United States decided to take a stand and took the courage of speaking bluntly. Ever since then this movement spread throughout the world.

Recently, comedian and TV host Mani had posted a mocking post regarding the founder of #Metoo movement and it turned out to be a reason of backlash for him. The controversial Instagram post was later said to be “Posted by mistake by his PR” by the star.

For clarifying himself, Mani wrote a tweet, saying: “I would like to inform all my followers that I am not very much active on social media and was not aware that any such picture is posted on my Instagram. Would like to apologise on behalf of my PR guy who posted it by mistake. Please do help us improve in all aspects of life”.

Mani had tweeted an apology as he was being slammed by the social media users on mocking the founder of the #MeToo movement in a social media post, which he had deleted after severe criticism.

The actor posted a picture on Instagram of #MeToo founder Tarana Burke with the words, “This is Tarana Burke, the founder of Me Too movement. Don’t know who touched her and why?” written next to it.

As soon as the post got under the notice of the public, they started roasted the actor on being racist and disrespecting women on the basis of her physical appearance.

Many agonizing users commented on Mani’s post-schooling him what the #MeToo movement is about. Many others commented against Mani’s “disgusting viewpoint” while others asked him to be “ashamed of himself”.

In recent weeks the #MeToo movement in neighbouring India has gathered pace, a year after the hashtag first went viral. The public allegations by Bollywood star Tanushree Dutta against a fellow actor emboldened a wave of women in India to tell their own stories. A government minister, MJ Akbar, resigned this month after at least 20 women accused him of sexual harassment.
