ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court dismissed on Monday, a petition seeking the disqualification of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman, Imran Khan, in a major relief to the politician who now serves as the 22nd premier of the country.
A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Umar Atta Bandial and Justice Ijazul Ahsan conducted the first hearing of the plea filed by Barrister Daniyal Chaudhry.
During the hearing, Justice Ahsan remarked that the ‘petition is now ineffective.’
Upon this, Barrister Chaudhry’s counsel argued that an issue stated in the petition was still effective and the petitioner will take it up with the high court.
To this, Justice Ahsan remarked that no one had stopped the petitioner from approaching the high court.
Following the brief hearing, Barrister Chaudhry withdrew his petition seeking the disqualification of Imran Khan.
In his petition, filed last year, Chaudhry had contended that Imran Khan was not eligible to be a member of the National Assembly (MNA) under Articles 62 and 63 for concealing facts in the nomination papers.
The petitioner was a Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz member and contested against Awami Muslim League Chief, Sheikh Rasheed for the NA-62 seat in July 25 polls, however, lost the seat.
Moreover, Danyal is the son of PML-N Senator Chaudhry Tanveer Ahmed Khan, who is considered close to former premier Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz.
