LAHORE (Web Desk) – The counting process is underway for Local Bodies elections in Cantonment areas in the country after balloting process ended at 5 PM.
One thousand one hundred and fifty one candidates are contesting the elections for 199 seats in 42 Cantonment Boards. According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), these included 541 candidates of political parties and 610 independents. There are 1.87 million registered voters in these areas.
There are eighteen (18) political parties that have fielded five or more candidates for these elections.
In all, PTI has fielded 137 candidates in the four provinces, followed by PML (N) 128, PPP 89, JI 74, MQM and PAT 27 each, ANP 13, MMA 9 and AML 7 candidates.
The ECP has set up 1,225 polling stations in the four provinces to hold Cantonment Board elections. There are 130 polling stations, which were sensitive, the highest being 102 in Punjab.
The ECP has also set an Election Cell at its Secretariat in Islamabad to receive complaints on the polling day on Saturday. The Cell will also receive preliminary results.
Meanwhile, twelve thousand and four hundred troops of Pakistan Army and Ranger were also employed on security duty for local government elections in 42 cantonments.
According to the ISPR, troops were requisitioned by Election Commission of Pakistan to ensure security and assist election commission in smooth conduct of elections.
