PHC restrains govt from releasing ex-TTP spox Ehsanullah Ehsan

PESHAWAR – The Peshawar High Court has ordered the government on Wednesday to keep ex-Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan behind bars.

A two-judge bench of PHC, comprising Justice Qaiser Rashid Khan and Justice Ikram Ullah Khan, disposed of a petition filed by Fazal Khan, father of an Army Public School victim, who argued that the government was planning to give liberty to Ehsanullah Ehsan.

After hearing the arguments, the court ordered that no clemency should be given to Ehsan and government must properly investigate him.

In the petition, the victim’s father had asked the court to ensure that Ehsan was not pardoned as he had claimed responsibility for the 2014 attack on Peshawar’s APS in which at least 144 people, mostly children, were martyred.

The court remarked that Ehsanullah was the prime accused in the heinous attack on APS, however, observed that under the law, the families of victims can willingly grant leniency or pardon.

During the hearing, Deputy Attorney General Musaratullah Khan assured the court that the government does not plan to release Ehsan, adding that the former Taliban leader was already undergoing an inquiry.

Ehsanullah Ehsan was a top leader of Jamaat-ul-Ahrar faction and the former spokesperson for the TTP and had surrendered himself to security forces in April 2017.
