Woman ‘raped for hours’ mid surgery at Lahore’s Services Hospital

LAHORE – A medical board of government doctors has launched an inquiry into the alleged rape of a patient during her surgery at a leading public health facility in Punjab’s capital city, according to a report Sunday.

A resident of Lahore’s Multan Road area lodged a formal complaint with the Shadman Police, in which she has nominated a number of unknown doctors of sexually assaulting her at Services Hospital.

The 35-year-old was treated for an abscess near her uterus and was advised a surgery by the doctors.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the woman claims that she was raped by the doctors inside the operation theatre during an unusually longer surgery.

“I was admitted to the hospital for a surgery on November 24. When I regained consciousness from the anaesthesia that night, I realised I had been assaulted during the surgery. It was an 8-hour-long operation but they discharged me from the hospital the same day,” the woman told the police.

Punjab Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid on Monday formed a three-member inquiry committee to investigate the alleged rape of a woman at Services Hospital in Lahore.

According to details, a three-member committee comprising of Services Hospital Principal Dr Mehmood Ayaz, Dr Rubeena Sohail and Professor of Forensic Medicine Dr Arif Rasheed will probe the rape case.

The DNA samples of the alleged victim have been collected, according to the hospital officials. Senior doctors have not ruled out the possibility of the victim being assaulted but to many of them, it’s something near to impossible at a public hospital.

Previously, a medical board consisting of four lady doctors had been formed for the woman’s medical examination and found no evidence of rape, according to a press release issued by Services Hospital medical superintendent.

However, the inquiry will be completed today (Monday), says a source in the hospital.
