NEW DELHI – The mere mention of maggots is enough to make people sick to their stomach. Imagine what the sight of dozens of maggots squirming about in a human being’s mouth would do.
Revolting footage uploaded by a user from India on YouTube, shows a dental surgeon coming face-to-face with a mouth infested with maggots – the slimy larval stage of flies and other related insects usually found feeding on rotten flesh.
The patient, an elderly woman presumably because of the long hair, appears to be under sedation and can be heard taking deep breaths, as a tube pumps anaesthetic gas through the nose.
The person has her lower lip tugged to reveal the seriousness of the oral infestation.
Daily Mail reported that the woman appears to suffer from oral myiasis – a condition when the tissues in the oral cavity are invaded by parasites.
Oral myiasis is associated with poor oral hygiene but those who have suffered wounds or injury to the face, are also at risk of the rare condition.
The 56-second clip has been viewed over 400,000 times on YouTube.
