Adiala Jail officials face suspension for sexually harassing a colleague

RAWALPINDI – Two officials of Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail have been suspended for a three-month period for sexually harassing a fellow officer, according to authorities.

Adiala Jail’s Assistant Superintendent (AS) Moazzam Ali along with a warder named Muhammad Bilal allegedly attempted to rape another warder, identified as Safdar.

Their suspension was ordered by the IG Adiala prison after a probe carried out the jail’s SSP.

DIG Jail Naveed Rauf will further investigate the matter.

In 1984, the District Jail Rawalpindi was shifted to a newly constructed building in Adiala village after which it was named Central Jail Adiala Rawalpindi.

Originally constructed to hold 1,900 prisoners, it now houses over 6,000 inmates — more than three times that its designated space can cater to.

Currently, there is a hospital and a furniture factory inside the prison along with an electronics workshop. For female inmates, there is a vocational training centre where they are taught sewing and other crafts and skills. The inmates are paid for their work, but the remuneration is meager.

The under-trial prisoners are tasked to work in the jail’s gardens. There is an auditorium inside the jail as well, which is opened on only certain occasions, such as Eid.
