GUJRANWALA (Staff Report) – Vote counting began after the completion of polling time in by-election of PP-100, Gujranwala.
The polling process, started at 8am today, concluded at 5pm without any break.
Heavy rains hampered the voting process at various polling stations during the day.
Supporters of PML-N and PTI clashed at various polling stations . Scores were injured before police controlled the situation.
A close competition is expected today between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the by-elections.
The seat became vacant after PML-N’s Rana Shamshad Ahmad was assassinated on May 31. His elder brother Rana Akhtar is N-League’s candidate in today’s by-elections.
Meantime, PTI has fielded Ehsanullah Virk in a constituency of 162,000 registered voters.
As many as 113 polling stations have been made for the by-polls. Of them, 22 have been declared sensitive.
Pakistan Army will remain on guard for law and order during the voting process.
Gujranwala’s constituency PP-100 is believed to be a strong PML-N bastion which was won by Rana Shamshad of the ruling party with a big margin in 2013 general polls.
