ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) central working committee on Monday named Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif as an interim president of the party.
Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who had been disqualified as party president by the Supreme Court earlier this month, suggested the name of his younger brother as successor.

PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Maryam Nawaz, Hamza Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab Governor Rafiq Rajwan, Tallal Chaudhry, Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique and other leaders of the party unanimously expressed confidence over the decision of the Nawaz Sharif.
A meeting of the party’s general council will be held on March 6 when Shehbaz Sharif would be appointed as permanent president of the PML-N.
Shehbaz Sharif on his election tweeted as “Humbled by the confidence my leader Nawaz Sharif & CWC reposed in me. Vow to work day in and day out to come up to the expectation of the party leadership & workers. The journey of progress will continue unabated IA”.

He was first elected as the president of the embattled PML-N during exile in 2002 as the cases were registered against Nawaz Sharif. In 2006, he was again elected as the party president.

The meeting has been summoned after the Supreme Court disqualified former prime minister Nawaz Sharif as head of the PML-N.

Supreme Quaid For Life
In the meeting, the former prime minister has been elected as Quaid (supreme leader) of the party for life. Maryam Nawaz in her tweet said, “Raja Zafarul Haq, PM Abbasi & CM SS proposal elicited a resounding approval from CWC”.

Political Background of Shehbaz Sharif
Shehbaz Sharif started his political career as president of Lahore Chamber of Commerce in 1985, and later he was elected as the member of Punjab assembly in 1988.
In 1990, he became a member of the National Assembly and he was again elected as MPA from Punjab in 1993.
In 1997, he first became the chief minister of Punjab in 1997 and bagged the seat twice in 2008. Currently, he is serving as CM of Punjab for the third time.
