MAYURBHANJ – A minor girl in India’s district Odisha tried to commit suicide after she was allegedly raped by her neighbour.
According to Indian media, the victim stated that she had gone to the nearby pond to relieve herself when her neighbour abducted and raped her.
The girl tried to commit suicide on inaction by police against the accused.
After the suicide attempt, police registered a case against the suspect and launched the investigation into the matter.
Previously, another minor rape victim, unhappy over alleged police inaction, took her life on Wednesday in Odisha and shows how local police inaction to prevent such heinous crimes.
This is the third rape incident in Indian state Odisha. Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India.
Odisha, with a rate of 84.2, was ranked third behind Delhi (160.4) and Assam (131.3) in the number of crimes reported against women, as per the National Crime Record Bureau figures for 2016.
In 2016, the state also topped the list of states in “assault or use of criminal force to women with intent to disrobe under section 354 B of IPC”.
