SC takes unprecedented step after Shahid Masood story becomes suspect

KARACHI – Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar summoned renowned journalists and owners of media organizations following TV anchor Dr. Shahid Masood’s revelations about bank accounts details of Zainab’s alleged killer.

The chief justice while hearing a case at Karachi Registry issued notices to Hameed Haroon, Mir Shakil ur Rehman, Rameeza Nizami, Fahad Hussain, I.A Rehman, Mujib ur Rehman Shami, Kamran Khan, Kashif Abbasi, Hamid Mir, Mian Amir Mahmood Sarmad Ali and Zia Shahid. He also summoned journalist organizations.

The chief justice said that he will be hearing the case in Lahore Registry on Sunday (tomorrow) and directed the journalists to appear in the court as they wanted to trace the truth with the help of the media.

Earlier this week, Masood, in his show on a private news channel, had alleged that Zainab’s suspected rapist and murderer identified as Imran Ali was an active member of a child-porn ring, which also includes a Punjab minister and federal minister.

He also claimed that the suspected murderer has 37 foreign currency bank accounts, adding that the accused was not mentally challenged person.

The TV anchor also asked the chief justice, Chief of Army Staff and prime minister to conduct thorough investigations to find the secret truth.

Later, he was summoned by the Supreme Court on Thursday where he submitted the bank accounts details and names of person, including ministers, involved in the crime to the court.

During the hearing, the court ordered the authorities concerned to investigate the claims. The chief justice also warned the TV anchor as saying, “If these accusations are incorrect, it will not be good”.

A joint investigation team (JIT) formed, to probe the killing of the seven-year-old girl in Kasur, with the assistance of the State Bank of Pakistan, launched an investigation to trace the suspected bank accounts of Imran Ali.

The central bank chief in a press conference refused Dr Shahid’s claims and said it found no such bank accounts that were maintained by Imran Ali.
